Malabar Spinach is a leafy green native to tropical regions of India and Indonesia but is not a true spinach. The dark green Malabar leaves are juicy, citrusy, and peppery flavored when eaten raw but taste like spinach when cooked.
Malabar is a gorgeous vining edible that looks like an ornamental but is packed with nutrients. It is Southern heat tolerant and will grow long after all true spinach varieties have bolted or died. Malabar spinach is a good source of vitamins A and C, calcium, potassium, and iron. It has more than three times the vitamin C of spinach and more than 1.5 times the vitamin A of kale.
Plant with vining beans, peas, or cucumbers, which protect them from the summer heat. Strawberries and roots like onions, radishes, carrots, and beets are friendly companions to leafy greens. Mix lots of flowers and herbs in the bed to ward off insects and attract beneficial ones. Most herbs work well with and compliment leafy greens.
Starter will be in a 4" reusable nursery pot.
