The Better Boy tomato is a hybrid variety developed 60 years ago from the Teddy Jones heirloom tomato and an unknown red variety developed by plant breeder John Peto. W. Atless Burpee Seed Company first marketed it as an improved version of Big Boy.
The Better Boy tomato variety is indeterminate, growing more than 8 feet long, and needs staking as it grows. One Better Boy plant won a Guinness World Record in 1987 for producing 340 pounds of tomatoes from one single plant. Expect heavy yields.
The tomatoes are usually about one pound each and are ideal for slicing, canning, and making sauces.
Interplant with basil, marigolds, calendula, onions, garlic, chives, thyme, rosemary, and oregano to improve flavor, increase harvest, repel harmful pests, and attract beneficial insects like bees and ladybugs.
Starter will be in a 4" reusable nursery pot.
