Banana Melons are a popular old heirloom variety from New York in the 1880s. JH Gregory’s Catalogue first mentioned them in 1885, saying, “When ripe, it reminds one of a large, overgrown banana... It smells like one, having a remarkably powerful and delicious fragrance.”
These fascinating melons can grow to 24 inches long and weigh 5 to 10 lbs at maturity. They are very sweet and juicy, have hints of banana taste and aroma, and a subtle papaya texture.
This variety is green-skinned while growing but turns yellow when ripe. Banana Melons are a rich source of potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C, as well as potassium and fiber.
Melons need good pollination to ensure that you have ample fruit set. Plant with lots of herbs and flowers to bring in pollinators.
Starter will be in a 4" reusable nursery pot.
